BOSTON, Mass.  – Today, the NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts PAC, the political arm of the Commonwealth’s leading grassroots pro-choice advocacy organization, announced the endorsement of Mike Dooley for State Representative of the 12th Norfolk District. Dooley earned the endorsement for his commitment to being the first true pro-choice champion to represent the district.

“For far too long, the 12th Norfolk District has lacked a reproductive freedom champion who is truly committed to protecting and expanding access to essential reproductive health care services,” said Rebecca Hart Holder, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts. “Reproductive freedom is under attack across the country. Now is the time for the Commonwealth to be a leader by removing barriers to care and there is simply no place in our legislature for politicians who repeatedly no-show on important votes for reproductive freedom. Mike Dooley has the courage to stand up and make his voice heard on these issues.”

Dooley is running against longtime incumbent John Rogers, who has a track record of not being there for the women and families of his district when it comes to reproductive freedom. According to roll call 409, on July 18, 2018, he did not vote on S.2260, also known as the NASTY Women Act, which repealed Massachusetts’ harmful and archaic abortion care laws, some of which outright banned abortion, banned unmarried people from seeking abortion or contraceptive services, and punished medical providers for distributing contraception or providing abortion care. Representative Rogers did, however, find time to vote on two different bills that day, just before and just after S.2260 was voted upon. Representative Rogers also managed to miss the vote on H.3638, which provided emergency funding for family planning centers after the Trump administration enacted a harmful gag rule. He also co-sponsored H2039, a 2015 bill which would have created medically unnecessary restrictions on abortion care providers, similar to the ones we’ve seen passed in anti-choice states over the years that aim to put access out of reach for millions of Americans.

“I will be an unapologetic proponent for reproductive freedom on Beacon Hill. The women and families of the 12th Norfolk District need to have their rights protected and their voices heard,” said Mike Dooley. “I will not sit on the sidelines the same way Representative Rogers has. I plan to fight to protect and expand abortion access, and ensure that all Bay Staters have the full spectrum of reproductive health care choices available to them.”

The NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts PAC encourages all residents of the 12th Norfolk District to vote for Mike Dooley in the Democratic Primary on September 1. For information about voting by mail, click here
