Boston, Mass. — NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, the Commonwealth’s leading grassroots pro-choice advocacy organization, is urging voters to support pro-choice candidates during election season, beginning today in New England with the New Hampshire primary. Abortion access and reproductive freedom are under constant attack by the Trump administration and, with the protections guaranteed by Roe v. Wade at risk with the confirmation of Justice Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, supporting pro-choice champions who will fight for reproductive freedom this election cycle is critical.
“Over the next few months as New Englanders head to the polls for primaries, we’re encouraging voters to be mindful of where candidates stand on abortion access and reproductive freedom,” said Rebecca Hart Holder, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts. “It’s not enough for candidates to say they are pro-choice, we need to elect reproductive freedom champions who will advance legislation that protects the right to choose. Anti-abortion legislators have been emboldened by an Administration that perpetuates lies and inflammatory, anti-science rhetoric in an attempt to return our country to the days before Roe v. Wade. The threat to bodily autonomy in this country is greater than ever. We, as voters, need to support candidates who are up to the task of protecting our rights.”
While much of the attention during the next few months will be on national elections, NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts is encouraging Bay State voters to be active in the state and local races that will be critical to protecting reproductive freedom in the Bay State. Five special elections will be taking place in Massachusetts this March. State legislators are key decision makers on reproductive freedom policy, and those who win their seats in special elections often occupy them for many years. The outcomes of these races will impact our access to reproductive health care for years to come. NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts’s top legislative priority this year is the ROE Act which, if passed, will protect and expand reproductive rights by ensuring that anyone, regardless of age, race, gender, or insurance status, can access safe and legal abortion.
While state legislatures across the country continue to launch brazen and unconstitutional attacks on abortion access, Massachusetts can be a leader and protect the health and safety of its citizens by passing this transformative piece of legislation. Voters curious about where their legislators stand on reproductive freedom and the ROE Act can refer to the ROE Act co-sponsorship page. Voters can also find out who their elected officials are by visiting the Massachusetts state legislature’s website.
The votes we take as a country over these next few months will be crucial to the fight for reproductive freedom. The stakes could not be higher and we need candidates who will champion reproductive freedom at the national and state level. NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts is calling on voters to hold their elected leaders accountable by asking what they will do to protect and expand reproductive rights.
