Statement from the ROE Act Coalition applauding the 2019 Massachusetts Democratic Convention’s overwhelming approval of a resolution calling for the immediate passage of the ROE Act:
“Massachusetts voters came together from across the state today to declare that abortion is health care and health care is a human right. The overwhelming majority of Massachusetts voters support the right to safe, legal abortion, and the values of bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom affirmed in this resolution are at the heart of who we are as a Commonwealth.
“As extreme politicians in other states rip away people’s basics rights, the people of Massachusetts are more committed than ever to ensuring every person has the right—and ability—to determine their own lives and futures. Today’s resolution is an urgent call to dismantle our state’s existing barriers to care and guarantee that abortion is not only safe and legal, but affordable and accessible.
“The ROE Act Coalition looks forward to its continued partnership with local advocates and elected leaders to swiftly pass the ROE Act and serve as a national leader for reproductive freedom.”
The ROE Act builds safeguards for young people seeking abortion care; includes abortion in the pregnancy-related safety-net coverage provided to Massachusetts residents ineligible for MassHealth coverage; ensures access to abortion after 24 weeks of pregnancy in cases of fatal fetal diagnosis; reforms state law to remove inflammatory definitions and medically unnecessary restrictions; and codifies the principles of reproductive freedom into state law.
The ROE Act Coalition is a statewide coalition of medical, advocacy, and legal groups committed to passing the ROE Act to protect and expand access to abortion in Massachusetts. Founding organizations include the ACLU of Massachusetts, NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, and Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts.
