At a confirmation hearing today before the Governor’s Council, Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court nominee Judge Scott Kafker guaranteed that he would uphold the constitutional right to abortion as a justice on the state’s highest court. Judge Kafker is the fifth and final Supreme Judicial Court candidate nominated by Governor Charlie Baker in his first term, each of whom has committed to upholding reproductive freedom in the Commonwealth.
“NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts applauds Judge Kafker for making a commitment to protect the health and safety of Massachusetts women as a Supreme Judicial Court justice,” said Rebecca Hart Holder, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts. “Today’s guarantee from Judge Kafker ensures that all five new justices on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court will uphold abortion rights and keep Massachusetts a beacon of reproductive freedom—in a sharp contrast to President Trump’s recent appointment of anti-choice Justice Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court.”
Holder added, “Over the past year, more than 1,000 NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts member activists have spoken up about the need to ensure that every member of the Supreme Judicial Court will uphold the right to choose. They know that securing this right in Massachusetts is essential in a moment when the federal government is actively eroding reproductive rights and when the mere presence of Justice Neil Gorsuch on the Supreme Court poses a dire threat to Roe v. Wade.
“Protecting the constitutional right to abortion in the highest court in the state is absolutely critical to maintaining women’s ability to determine their families, their lives, and their reproductive freedom. Today’s hearing sends a clear signal that Massachusetts will hold the line against federal attacks on reproductive freedom.”
